Suaram secretary released on police bail

JOHOR BARU, Oct 19 – Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) secretary Cheng Lee Whee, who was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for making a statement alleging the police of power abuse, which was posted on the Johor police web portal, was released on police bail until Nov 1.

Johor police deputy chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said Cheng, detained at 10.25pm on Friday, was released yesterday after the court rejected an application by the police to remand her.

“Police have opened investigation papers over her statement on the police web portal,” he told reporters here today.

Tun Hisan said Cheng’s detention was made in accordance with the law and that police would investigate the case before referring it to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

Cheng, 26, in her statement in the police web portal, alleged that police had abused their power in Thursday’s "forced eviction" of residents of the Kampung Baru Plentong Tengah squatter settlement.

She claimed that police had deployed water-cannon trucks and the Federal Reserve Unit for the operation, and that several of her friends were arrested during the incident.

Tun Hisan said the police presence at the site on Thursday was to ensure the residents’ safety and that the court order was carried out.

“Based on reports received by the police, there were protests on the action to demolish vacant houses in the village and police had acted to ensure public safety.

“In the process, 27 people, including three Suaram members, were detained for obstructing public officers from carrying out their duties,” he added. – Bernama
