Juventus wins Turin derby

TURIN, Oct 26 - Brazilian forward Amauri scored in the 48th minute to lead Juventus over Torino 1-0 Saturday for its first league victory in more than a month.

Amauri dribbled by a defender and scored his fifth goal of the season in the Turin derby with an angled shot, aided by a poor saving attempt by goalkeeper Alex Calderoni, who was filling in for injured Matteo Sereni.

Juventus was also missing its first-choice goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, and several other starters as well. Calls were being made for coach Claudio Ranieri to lose his job following a loss to Napoli last weekend, but now Juve has won two big games in five days — including its 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Juventus hadn’t won in the league since beating Cagliari 1-0 on Sept 21. Amauri also scored against Napoli and Madrid.

“To score the winning goal in my first derby is a dream,” Amauri said. “I’m happy for Juventus, which is now back to being the Juventus we all know.”

With 12 points, Juventus moved back into the top half of the table.

Also, Catania drew 1-1 at Siena to move within one point of league-leader Inter Milan, which hosts Genoa on Sunday. Inter leads with 16 points.

Second-half substitute Emanuele Calaio put Siena in front in the 75th minute, heading in a cross from Cristiano Del Grosso.

Three minutes later, Catania was awarded a penalty kick when Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Curci tripped forward Michele Paolucci following an ill-advised backward pass from Calaio. Giuseppe Mascara converted the spot kick to equalise.

In Sunday’s other games, surging AC Milan is at Atalanta, Udinese hosts struggling AS Roma and Lazio plays Napoli. - AP

Ballack to apologise to Loew

FRANKFURT, Oct 26 - Captain Michael Ballack plans to apologise to Joachim Loew for publicly criticizing the Germany coach.

“I will sit together in the shortest possible time, as soon as my health permits me, with Joachim Loew and I will apologise for my behavior,” Ballack said in a statement distributed late Saturday by his agent Michael Becker.

Ballack said “the success of the team” was the only thing on his mind when he criticized Loew this week in a newspaper interview.

The captain condemned Loew for leaving his friend and fellow midfielder Torsten Frings on the bench for the last two World Cup qualifying games. Frings came off the bench and played the last seven minutes of the 2-1 win over Russia and did not play at all in the 1-0 win over Wales. Frings later said he was considering retirement from the national team and castigated Loew.

Ballack is recovering from surgery to remove thickened nerves from both feet.

Loew and Ballack talked by telephone earlier Saturday to agree to a meeting.

“The talk will take place as soon as possible,” German federation spokesman Harald Stenger said, probably after the Chelsea midfielder has stitches removed from his feet - AP

Beckham insists he’ll stay with Galaxy

CARSON, California, Oct 26 - David Beckham insists he will stay with the Los Angeles Galaxy regardless of any possible loan to Italian giant AC Milan.

“At the end of the day, my commitment is still to the Galaxy and that’s not changed,” Beckham said after training on Saturday. “But I’ve been given a chance to join up with one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I’m going to do that.

“The Galaxy are not against it. They’ve made that clear. They said that if I want to do that, then they’re prepared to let me go there on loan until our season.”

AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said he wants to bring Beckham to Italy on a loan and possibly sign him. If the loan takes place, Beckham would arrive in January.

“At the end of the day, it’s looking like it could happen,” Beckham said. “Hopefully, it will be finalized in the next week or two.”

Major League Soccer deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis said on Thursday the loan would be approved only if it “makes sense” for Los Angeles and Beckham, who signed a five-year contract in January 2007.

One issue concerns whether Beckham will return to Los Angeles for the preseason in March or for the first regular-season game.

“At the moment, it’s not even certain yet,” Beckham said of the loan. “We’re still talking to Milan. It’s (for) a two-month spell, maybe a little bit longer.”

Teammate Landon Donovan, who has talked about possibly playing in Europe after this season, criticized the timing of Beckham’s pursuit of a loan agreement.

“Candidly, yes,” Donovan said when asked if the timing bothered him. “It doesn’t make anything better and it doesn’t worsen anything. But it would have been nice to wait. I’m waiting until after Sunday to see what happens.”

The Galaxy’s season ends on Sunday against Dallas.

Beckham, 33, has said he wants to play for England in the 2010 World Cup. But England coach Fabio Capello said he would consider the midfielder for future qualifying games only if he trains consistently and plays at a high level.

“Footballers don’t have four months off in any league in the world, apart from here,” Beckham said of MLS’ offseason. “My body is programmed not to have so much time off. I need to play.”

During the previous off-season, Beckham trained with Arsenal. He returned to the Galaxy in March for preseason training.

Beckham has played eight games for England since Capello replaced Steve McClaren as coach in December, raising his career total to 107 caps. - AP

Jankovic to end season as No. 1

ST PETERSBURG, Oct 26 - Jelena Jankovic of Serbia will end the season at No 1, outlasting four other players who held the WTA Tour’s top ranking during the year.

Jankovic’s 4,555 points give her a commanding lead over Dinara Safina (3,782) and Serena Williams (3,716). She will retain the top spot regardless of the outcome of the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, the WTA announced on Saturday.

“It has been a truly amazing year for me,” Jankovic said. “I worked really hard this year, and to finish No. 1 is where I want to be and where I hope to stay.”

The 23-year-old, who hasn’t won a major, lost to Williams in the US Open final in September. She won four titles and is 63-17 so far this year.

Jankovic secured the year-end ranking by winning 12 straight matches in September-October en route to three consecutive titles: the China Open in Beijing, the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, and the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

She first claimed the No. 1 ranking on Aug 11, holding it for one week. She regained the top spot on Oct 6 following her win in Stuttgart.

She also advanced to the semifinals of two other Grand Slams, losing to eventual champion Maria Sharapova at the Australian Open and eventual champion Ana Ivanovic at the French Open.

The other players to hold the top ranking were the retired Justine Henin (20 weeks), Ivanovic (12), Sharapova (three) and Williams (four). - AP

Dark cloud looms over US earnings season

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 26 - Buckle up and hunker down, because we’re in for a rough recession.

That stark message grew louder and clearer last week as more investors fled Wall Street because companies reporting third-quarter earnings were pessimistic about the quarters ahead, with bleak forecasts and mass layoffs.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 473 points — 5.35 per cent — as many investors shifted their focus from the credit crisis to the economy and didn’t like the prolonged, global recession they saw on the horizon.

“We are starting to see wholesale capitulation,” said Peter Morici, an economist and business professor at the University of Maryland. “We are headed for some very bad times.”

Although not everyone is quite as apocalyptic, the picture emerging from corporate America is unrelentingly gloomy.

If executives from some of the world’s largest companies are correct, here are a few of the dreary things to expect in the next few months: Fewer — and cheaper — gifts under Christmas trees. Emptier restaurants because more people will be eating fast-food burgers when they do splurge on meals out. More unsold cars sitting in automobile lots. Longer unemployment lines as companies cut costs to offset their declining sales.

Even the bright spots aren’t exactly feel-good stories. Two of the largest tobacco companies stood by their profit projections while another raised its earnings outlook, largely because their cancer-causing products usually sell reasonably well even in tough times.

A recession hasn’t been declared by the national bureau of economists who look for two consecutive quarterly declines in the United States’ gross domestic product. That has yet to show up in government statistics.

But that’s an oversimplification that ignores other yardsticks used to identify a recession, including employment, household incomes, retail sales and business production. And business leaders aren’t waiting for the official proclamation.

“We are going into what is very clearly a recession mode,” Blake Jorgensen, Yahoo Inc.’s chief financial officer, told The Associated Press a few days ago after the Internet company disclosed plans to fire at least 1,500 workers — about 10 percent of the payroll — by the end of this year.

Caterpillar Inc, the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment, cited the “recessionary conditions” in the United States in a forecast that envisions little sales growth next year.

Even companies seemingly in strong positions are treading more carefully. Internet search leader Google Inc. and software kingpin Microsoft Corp, which combined have US$35 billion in the bank, are keeping a closer eye on expenses. Apple Inc predicted its profits and sales during the holiday season will be well below analyst estimates even though the company sold a record number of Macintosh computers, iPhones and iPods during the quarter it just completed in September.

Even before this brutal month began, the US economy had lost 760,000 jobs this year. This normally might be a sign that a rebound isn’t far off. Executives typically hold off on layoffs and other huge cost-cutting moves in the early stages of a downturn — and finally get around to pruning the payroll when the worst is over, said Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist for Charles Schwab & Co.

This time, though, Sonders doesn’t think a turnaround is imminent. She believes the recession began late last year and probably won’t end until the middle of next year, at the earliest.

Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist for Standard & Poor’s equity research, has a more precise timeline. He says the recession began in December 2007 and won’t end until May 2009.

That would be a 17-month recession — the longest since World War II. The United States suffered through 16-month recessions from July 1981-November 1982 and November 1973-March 1975.

The steep decline in the stock market is another indication of more trouble ahead, if you follow the rule of thumb that investors are typically making their decisions based on what things will look like in six to nine months.

That foreshadows months of continued, widespread layoffs, although few experts are predicting unemployment will get as high as 10.8 per cent, the peak it reached in the last severe recession, during 1981-82. US unemployment currently stands at 6.1 perc ent. It was 4.4 per cent as recently as March 2007, which marked the low point for unemployment in the last economic expansion.

Many companies are wrestling with eroding earnings or even losses — distress signals giving them ample reason to retrench.

By the time all third-quarter results are in, the combined operating profits of 1,500 companies tracked by Standard & Poor’s are expected to be 13 per cent lower than profits in the same period last year. For all of 2008, the operating profits for the same 1,500 companies are expected to be down 26.5 per cent.

It’s not difficult to understand why Chrysler LLC announced plans during the past week to jettison nearly 7,000 jobs, including contractors. The automaker said it lost US$660 million in its last quarter.

Others, like Yahoo and Xerox Corp., aren’t losing money, but are trying to make more money off of lackluster revenue growth. By cutting 3,000 jobs in the next six months, Xerox thinks it will be able to boost its 2009 profit by at least 10 per cent.

Once a few companies start to fire workers, it can have a snowball effect as other executives realise they need to satisfy Wall Street’s desire for cost cuts or they have a chance to trim unwanted workers without looking too cold-hearted.

Stovall expects to see the drumbeat continue, with more companies dimming their outlooks.

“That just makes it a little easier to beat expectations the next year,” Stovall said, “when things might be getting a little better.” - AP

'Malaysia safe from global financial turmoil''Malaysia safe from global financial turmoil'

KUWAIT, Oct 26 - "We are not seriously affected by the global financial turmoil. We are not saying nil, but on a minimal level." So disclosed Mohammad Rafik Kadir, Deputy Governor of Bank Negara, speaking with the local media on the sidelines of a seminar conducted at the Sheraton Hotel here recently.

Rafik's delegation of over 30 Malaysian businessmen visited the country with the aim of strengthening bilateral economic ties with Kuwait.

Rafik was accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising of Omar Merican, Chief Operating Officer of Malaysian Stock Exchange, Raja Nazrin Shah, Jalila Baba, Director General Malaysia Industrial Authority and Kris Azman Abdullah, Securities Commission Malaysia. Malaysian Ambassador to Kuwait Ashaary Sani hosted the economic delegation.

"We are not seriously affected. Only 12 per cent of our total export is with the US. We have 11 per cent trading
with the EU and about 15 per cent in the Arab world. The majority of our trade is with the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean), which constitutes about 64 per cent of our trading overseas," he said.

The Malaysian Stock Exchange, however, admitted to a downfall of 38 per cent on their stock index. But Omar Merican noted that Malaysia is still very fortunate compared with their neighbours.

"The Philippines' stock market is down by 45 per cent, Jakarta is 51 per cent negative, Korea is down by 44 per cent and Taiwan is 44 per cent off," he said.

Foreign direct investment according to Jalilah Baba, is thriving. "Despite the global financial turmoil, we have a mass of inquiries from abroad and we have some positive and ongoing negotiations. We might experience a slowdown in foreign direct investments in 2009 since many are cautious on spending, but it won't affect us much," she said.

Asked on the status of their meetings with their counterparts here, Rafik said "everything went well'.

"Our meeting was very successful. Our mission here was to create awareness about the Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre (MIFC) initiatives. MIFC was introduced by the Malaysian government in 2006 aimed at issuing licences to Islamic banking in Malaysia. With this regard, we have met with the chairman of the
Al-Aquila and Leasing Company and we briefed them about business opportunities in Malaysia," he added.

Taking the lead as a centre for Islamic Finance, MIFC provides for a coordinated regulatory framework, fiscal incentives and facilitative business environment. It has also actively initiated dialogues, road shows and spoken at seminars throughout the world in showcasing economic and trade opportunities leveraging on Islamic finance.

"We are keen to share with our Kuwaiti counterparts and key stakeholders the many opportunities and mutual benefits available under the MIFC initiative, in advancing the trade relationship and investment opportunities between our countries," Rafik added.

Kuwait and Malaysia enjoy a growing bilateral trade relationship that has seen Kuwait accounting for 0.2 per cent of Malaysia's total trade in the first seven months of 2008. Exports to Kuwait consist of fats and oil (dairy products and palm oil), electrical products and furniture, while imports from Kuwait are mainly minerals, plastics and ships.

Kuwaiti investments continue to play a growing role in Malaysia's financial market, insurance, real-estate and business service sub-sector, accounting for some 0.2 per cent of total foreign direct investment since 2004. This proportion, however, is expected to rise in the coming years.

Hindraf supporters released on police bailHindraf supporters released on police bail

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 26 - The 10 Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) supporters who were remanded for assembling in front of the Prime Minister’s office on Thursday, were released on police bail today.

They left the Putrajaya district police headquarters at 1.30pm, accompanied by their lawyers, led by Gobind Singh Deo and Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad, and Kuala Selangor MP Dr Dzulkifli Ahmad.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Wira Mohammad Sabtu Osman said that the eight men and two women were released on police bail and had to report back on Nov 25.

Some 50 supporters and family members had gathered outside the police headquarters early this morning.

Eleven Hindraf supporters, including three women, were detained on Thursday after they tried to hand over to the Prime Minister’s office a memorandum calling for the release, before Deepavali, of the Hindraf leaders held under the Internal Security Act. They also brought along a six-year-old girl to display a poster promoting their cause.

One of the group, K.Shanti, was released on police bail two days ago after her statement was recorded. - Bernama

Bursa ends broadly lower

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 - Share prices on Bursa Malaysia ended the day broadly lower today as sentiment weakened regionally amid worries of a global financial downturn, said dealers.

They said selling was moderate and investors were reluctant to hold fresh positions ahead of the long weekend with the Deepavali celebration on Monday.

The benchmark Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) slipped 12.96 points to end the session at 891.32, the lowest point since mid-2006, after opening 12.47 points lower at 891.81 this morning.

Throughout the session, the KLCI moved between 880.81 and 893.97.

"Foreign investors were the net sellers in most Asian markets. They are holding back their portfolio investments at the moment, waiting to see the finances of their respective countries in order first," said a dealer.

The Industrial Index fell 30.23 points to 2,108.97, the Finance Index shed 130.48 points to 6,851.72 and the Plantation Index eased 111.41 points to 3,688.62.

The FBMEmas slipped 72.81 points to 5,882.39, the FBM30 lost 55.28 points to 5,812.98, the FBM2BRD decreased 78.58 points to 4,365.15 while the FBM Mesdaq Index was 91.59 points lower at 3,342.37.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 477 to 161 while 188 counters were unchanged, 506 untraded and 26 others suspended.

Stormy days continue for country and economy

COMMENTARY

OCT 23 - The storms in downtown Kuala Lumpur is nothing to the storm surrounding EPF's RM5 billion loan to the highly-secretive fund manager Valuecap Sdn Bhd.

Nothing to the torrent of criticism against Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, who inherited the job as a sign of good faith from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Nothing to the deluge of vitriol against Abdullah as Umno foes and bitter critic Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad scheme to hasten his departure.

Nothing to the dark clouds of disappointment that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is not yet Prime Minister and won't be for some time to come.

But let's look on the bright side of things, if any.

Najib today launched the Malaysia Savings Sales 2008, the rebranded Year End Sales (YES) where retail stores try to convert the sound of footfalls into the ringing of cash registers.

Discounts are aplenty of course but wallets remain closed and credit is running short with Dr Mahathir saying unpaid credit card bills amount to some RM20 billion in Malaysia.

Not to mention the numerous personal loans being extended by local banks shielded from the global financial meltdown.

Put in that perspective, Valuecap's RM5 billion loan from the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is decent. Its just slightly less than the fund's second quarter income of RM5.2 billion but not even one percent of Bursa Malaysia's market capitalisation.

Which means?

OSK acting head of research Chris Eng said even if the entire amount is invested in index-linked stocks, it would theoretically lift the key Kuala Lumpur Composite Index by only 10 points.

The market fell 12.96 points to 891.32 points at the close today.

"Then again, the RM5 billion would have a multiplier effect that is larger than its actual sum as the buying activity, or even anticipated buying activity by Valuecap could lift sentiment and push the KLCI higher," Eng said.

The thin liquidity on the stock market will also see the RM5 billion having a multiplier effect, he added.

Valuecap, set up in 2002 to buy undervalued stocks, invests specifically in the Malaysian equity market and is jointly owned by Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Permodalan Nasional Bhd and the Retirement Fund (Inc).

Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said yesterday the loan was viable as Valuecap's portfolio had grown from RM5 billion initially to RM8 billion now.

Of course, the question is whether Valuecap can get more bang for its buck, and analysts believe so if it focuses on blue-chips such as MISC, Petronas Gas, DiGi, British American Tobacco, Petronas Dagangan, MAS, Sime Darby, Maybank, IOI, AMMB and MMC.

However, funds like Valuecap do not speak of its investments as it is only obliged to make the information public only if its investments in a company exceed the five per cent threshold.

From publicly-available documents, Valuecap has paid a total of RM135 million in dividend between 2003 and 2006 with the bulk of investments in trading and services sectors followed by banking stocks.

It has never lost money and has made more than RM200 million in net profit annually since 2003. Valuecap's best year was in 2004 when it made a net profit of RM504.1 million, an 81 percent surge. In 2006, it chalked a net profit of RM439 million.

One only hopes Valuecap's returns from now are more than the 5.8 percent dividend that EPF gave out last year to its contributors.

Umno disciplinary committee to announce measures to curb money politics

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 - Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today said Umno's disciplinary committee will be announcing several measures to curb money politics in the party very soon.

He said Umno had left it to the committee chaired by Tengku Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Rithauddeen Ismail to take the necessary action against members who indulged in money politics.

"The party president has met Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen on this to ask the committee to come down hard on those dabbling in money politics in the run up to Umno's polls in March next year," he told reporters after officiating the soft launch of The Malaysian Savings Sales 2008 at The Gardens, Mid Valley, Bangsar here.

Najib was asked on efforts the party was taking to tackle the matter as a number of people had spoken that money politics was rearing its ugly head at Umno's ongoing polls at the branch and division levels.

He also said that so far, there was no change in date as to the March polls, although some quarters had argued that with nominations closing on Nov 9, the campaigning period was far too long.

Asked about comments by party veterans that Umno needed more younger leaders, Najib said "All age groups have a role to play in Umno's struggle. However, in terms of active leadership, the majority of Umno members are of the view there is a need for a gradual generational change and I see this as a natural process."

He also urged Umno leaders to be more responsible, not only towards Umno members but to others as well if they they intended on keeping their posts.

"Holding a post in Umno, say for example if you are the divisional head, that is not the end of it all but is the beginning of your responsibility, and your responsibility is not only to the Umno members but also to the people at large. The time has come that they must go beyond Umno members," he said.

Asked who his Pekan Umno division would nominate for Umno's polls, he said: "We have not come to that yet."

Asked for his views on the call by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for Melaka Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ali Rustam to be nominated for Umno deputy president, Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said : "Anyone can contest for any post in the party provided the person meets the needed criteria."

Questioned why members of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) were free to carry out their activities when it has been banned as a society, he said that it was up to the police to act against them. - Bernama

6-year-old girl among 11 Hindraf leaders detained by police

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 - The six year old daughter of exiled Hindraf leader, P Waythamoorthy, P Vwaishhnnavi, was detained by the police today along with 11 others who came to Putrajaya to submit a letter to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi demanding the release of the five Hindraf leaders currently held under the ISA.

Those arrested include S. Jayathas and Waythamoorthy's wife, K. Shanti.

When contacted, Shanti said, they were taken to the Putrajaya district police headquarters as they were trying to submit a letter to the Prime Minister, handwritten by her daughter.

"They have not told us why we were arrested," she told The Malaysian Insider by phone from inside the police station..

In an immediate reaction, Kapar MP S. Manickavasagam, said the arrest shows that the government has not learned the lesson from the March 8 General Election and it only makes Abdullah look bad.

"They went as normal citizens," said Manickavasagam, when asked whether the arrest was related to the government's action to ban Hindraf.

Hindraf, an unregistered organization fighting for the betterment of the Indian community in the country was banned on Oct 15 for allegedly posing a threat to public order.

Manickavagam told The Malaysian Insider that he is still unsure of the reason behind the arrest but said he is in the process of getting lawyers to defend them.

Zulkifli Nordin attacks everyone over Islam

By Shannon Teoh

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 - Pakatan Rakyat MP Zulkifli Nordin accused several parties including his own of disrespecting or insulting Islam in Dewan Rakyat today.

"This pillar is being challenged from left, right, above, below, behind or in front, whether from the ruling party or from this side," he said, referring to the opposition benches.

His statements are set to reignite speculation that he is ready to crossover to Umno as PKR have constantly been criticised for not punishing Zulkifli despite the party's principles of multicultural tolerance.

The Bar Council bore the brunt of his outburst as he accused it of insulting Islam by supporting apostates in Dewan Rakyat today and called for a separate Bar Council for Syariah laywers to be established which will protect those who practise Syariah law.

"In the case of Azalina Jailani, the Bar Council sent a representative to be present in court to ensure she became an apostate," he added while debating the 2009 Budget.

Azalina, also known as Lina Joy, however, had failed in her attempt to have the Federal Court rule that her religion be changed from Islam to Christian in May last year.

The Kulim Badar Baharu MP also said that a recent forum by the Bar Council to discuss Islamic matters openly, caused racial and religious tensions.

Zulkifli had led a protest against the "Conversion to Islam" forum in August but insisted that he was there in his capacity as a Lawyers in Defence of Islam (Pembela) exco member, not an MP for PKR.

He reiterated his stand today, saying "There are those that speak as if I am supporting another party but I am actually fighting for Islam. I do not care about what other people think of me because I will have to answer to Allah."

Zulkifli proceeded to attack the suggestion that surfaced during the MCA General Assembly last weekend where delegates had called for the appointnment of a second Deputy Prime Minister who would be a non-Malay, calling it another challenge to Islam's position.

"It insults Islam when parties go to court insisting they have the right to use the world Allah like Muslims do," he said in reference to the ongoing case where local Catholic weekly The Herald is attempting to get a court order to allow it to use the word Allah.

Zulkifli also said that certain groups did not respect Muslims by disrupting Hari Raya celebrations by making unsuitable requests, an apparent reference to Hindraf's presence at the Cabinet open house where they lobbied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi to release the Hindraf 5 detained under the Internal Security Act.

He further claimed that the undermining of Islam had occurred since the time of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"This man had tried to expel a mufti who wanted to defend Islam. He soiled the institution of the Malay rulers with his deeds. He should be the last person to defend the Malays, after what he did. His hands are soiled," he said.

Zulkifli then asked for a mosque to be built specifically for the Chinese Muslim community in Kuala Lumpur as more Chinese were converting to the faith.

"I suggest the Pudu prison site be used for this purpose," he told Dewan Rakyat.

He suggested als for certain articles in the Federal Constitution be amended "so that Islam is not challenged by irresponsible parties."

Article 11(4) allows for state law and federal law in respect of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan, to restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam.

Zulkifli called for this clause to be passed into all state constitutions.

Article 3 protects freedom of religion which Zulkifli wants amended so that Muslims specifically be subject to the regulations of Islam.

Pak Lah to be PM till March; party polls may be in December

UPDATED

OCT 23 - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi said today the Umno supreme council will meet next Thursday to consider bringing forward Umno polls to December.

However the Umno president said that even if the party holds its elections in December, he will still hand over power to the new Umno president only in March assuming Barisan Nasional (BN) remains in control of the government.

Abdullah has already announced he will not seek re-election as Umno president, and Datuk Seri Najib Razak is the favourite to take over the party's leadership.

The party's general assembly had been postponed to next March to ensure a smooth transition of power, but some senior Umno leaders have been asking recently for the polls to be held in December instead.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi, was speaking in Beijing after opening the Khazanah Nasional Berhad Beijing Representative (BRO) office.

Abdullah, who is not seeking re-election as Umno president at the next party elections, said the timeline of the power transition in March next year remains
unchanged.

Bernama reports the Prime Minister as saying "We already have a transition plan. The transition plan will be in March next year," he said after launching the Beijing representative office of
Khazanah Nasional today.

Abdullah was asked by Malaysian newsmen on reports of moves by some Umno members to push for the party elections to be reverted to December this year.

The party general assembly, originally planned for December, was moved to March to pave the way for a smooth transition of leaders.

Elections for the Youth and Wanita wings of the party will also be held at the general assembly.

Najib, Muhyiddin on the starting blocks

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 - Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin have qualified to contest the Umno presidency and deputy presidency after obtaining nominations that exceeded the required quota.

As at 7pm tonight, Najib received 59 nominations after all the 15 Umno divisions that held their meetings today nominated him for the top Umno post.

Najib is the only candidate nominated for the post after 59 of the 191 Umno divisions held their delegates meeting since Oct 10.

Muhyiddin, who was the first to receive the requisite 39 nominations for the deputy presidency earlier today, received four nominations today from the Umno divisions in Gerik, Lenggong, Ledang and Bakri, raising his total to 42.

The other two candidates for the deputy presidency, namely Rural and Regional Development Minister Tan Sri Muhammad Muhamad Taib and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam also received nominations today.

Mohd Ali received nine new nominations to raise his total to 12 while Muhammad had two nominations today to raise his total to five.

The minimum nominations needed to contest the Umno president's post is 58 while a candidate vying for the deputy president's post needs at least 39 nominations.

In the race to be an Umno vice-president, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has qualified to contest after obtaining six more nominations from 10 Umno divisions today.

This brings his tally to 23 nominations so far, making him the fourth leader to qualify to contest for the post.

The others are Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

A candidate needs at least 20 nominations to contest the post.

Khaled, a supreme council member, said he was grateful for having reached the qualification quota.

"The nominations showed that they are confident that I'm capable of contributing to the party," he told reporters at a Hari Raya open house here.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar has received 11 nominations and former Federal Territories minister Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad received six nominations.

There was no change in the number of nominations received by the other candidates namely former Perlis menteri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (five), Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim (five); former Science, Technology and Innovations minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis (three), Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (two) and Kelantan Umno Liaison chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa (one).

In the Wanita Umno election, the movement's deputy head Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who had previously stated that she had no intention of contesting the Wanita head's post, has received four more nominations for the top post raising her total to 36 nominations.

Shahrizat received the nominations from the Gopeng, Kudat, Kepala Batas and Tanjung Wanita Umno divisions. She needs only three more nominations to meet the minimum quota of 39 nominations.

Incumbent Wanita Umno head Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz received four nominations to raise her total to 75, and Shahrizat too received four nominations for the vice-head post.

The pair received nominations from the Parit Sulong, Pasir Salak, Ayer Hitam and Pulai Wanita Umno divisions.
For the post of vice-head, Kuala Kangsar Wanita Umno head Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim received two more nominations from Kepala Batas and Gopeng, raising her total to 26.

Shahrizat and Kamilia are now eligible to contest for the Wanita Umno vice-head post where a minimum quota of 20 nominations are needed.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said received one more nomination from the Tanjung division to raise her total to six.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Maznah Mazlan is a new face in the contest for the Wanita Umno vice-head post when she received her first nomination from the Kudat Wanita Umno division.

Meanwhile, Johor Wanita Umno head Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique remains with two nominations and Wanita Central Exco member Dr Norraesah Mohamad received one nomination.

Khairy is now underdog in Umno Youth race

By Adib Zalkapli

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 – With only two weeks left to the end of Umno divisional delegates meetings, Umno Youth deputy chief, Khairy Jamaluddin, with only 33 nominations, remains the underdog for the contest to lead the wing, trailing far behind Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, who has received 60 nominations, while Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo, received 26.

Mukhriz obtained the minimum 38 nominations required to contest for the post on Oct 12, just three days after the start of divisional meetings, while Khairy is still struggling to get the 20% nominations.

Some observers blamed it on the decision by Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi not to defend the party presidency. At the same time, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had also urged Umno members to get rid of Abdullah’s men in the new administration.

The Rembau MP even failed to get a nomination from Putrajaya Umno, a division perceived to be inclined towards him as the Youth chief, Datuk Zaki Zahid is also a special officer to the Prime Minister.

He obtained only 22 votes, while Mukhriz got 33 and Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo, 22. A total of 90 delegates attended the meeting on Saturday afternoon that lasted for more than six hours.

However, Zaki retained his position, beating former Putrajaya Umno Youth exco member Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz, by merely three votes. Some delegates had predicted that Zaki would be another casualty in the uprising against Abdullah and his men.

Zaki was laughing when asked to interpret the voting trend, but admitted he would prefer someone else to be nominated for the Umno Youth chief post.

“I wish him congratulations; I was there when he came on Thursday, he was welcomed here in Putrajaya, although my personal preference is different, but we abide by the choice made by the delegates here,” said Zaki.

But for Tun Faisal, who is also a special officer to Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Husein, the signal for change from the delegates was very clear. He agreed that he did not totally lose the fight, as the division had nominated Mukhriz.

Newly elected Putrajaya Umno Youth deputy chief, Hishamuddin Yahya however was a little shocked by the nomination but not surprised with Zaki’s victory.

He added that less than 48 hours before the start of the meeting the fight for nomination was between Khir and Mukhriz.

“All three candidates were here to meet the delegates, Khairy came on the last day, the delegates have already decided to choose either Khir Toyo or Datuk Mukhriz,” said Hishamuddin, who initially thought Khir would be nominated by the division.

“Maybe the delegates were more impressed with Mukhriz’s campaign work,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

He said that Zaki’s victory shows that leaders linked to Abdullah are not rejected by the party grass roots.

“It is not right to reject someone just because he is connected to the Prime Minister, every leader must be judged individually, it is unfair, just because the Prime Minister is retiring. And Zaki is an active Youth leader, so he was judged based on his performance,” said Hishamuddin.

Suaram secretary released on police bail

JOHOR BARU, Oct 19 – Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) secretary Cheng Lee Whee, who was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for making a statement alleging the police of power abuse, which was posted on the Johor police web portal, was released on police bail until Nov 1.

Johor police deputy chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said Cheng, detained at 10.25pm on Friday, was released yesterday after the court rejected an application by the police to remand her.

“Police have opened investigation papers over her statement on the police web portal,” he told reporters here today.

Tun Hisan said Cheng’s detention was made in accordance with the law and that police would investigate the case before referring it to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

Cheng, 26, in her statement in the police web portal, alleged that police had abused their power in Thursday’s "forced eviction" of residents of the Kampung Baru Plentong Tengah squatter settlement.

She claimed that police had deployed water-cannon trucks and the Federal Reserve Unit for the operation, and that several of her friends were arrested during the incident.

Tun Hisan said the police presence at the site on Thursday was to ensure the residents’ safety and that the court order was carried out.

“Based on reports received by the police, there were protests on the action to demolish vacant houses in the village and police had acted to ensure public safety.

“In the process, 27 people, including three Suaram members, were detained for obstructing public officers from carrying out their duties,” he added. – Bernama

Muhyiddin: I respect transition plan

KOTA KINABALU, Oct 19 – International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin, who is contesting for the deputy presidency in the March Umno elections, said he has always respected the transition plan that has been agreed upon and reiterated that his comments were merely on the campaign period.

“I respect the transition plan that has been agreed upon. I was the first one who responded to say I respected it, I accepted it, I don’t ask anything about it anymore because that has been agreed upon by the leaders, council members, it is good that we stand by with the decision.

“I was just stating facts, if it (the campaign period) is long, it’s long. I didn’t propose beyond what I said,” he told reporters after attending the state Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) hari raya get together here, today.

Asked if he would make clarifications to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi directly, Muhyiddin replied: “I will definitely want to explain, no problem, if the Prime Minister wants me to explain what I said.”

On a question if he believed Abdullah had misunderstood what he was trying to say, Muhyiddin said many people did not understand what he was saying.

“Datuk Seri Najib also asked me two days ago whether I’ve read the report that came out in Utusan Malaysia.

“Actually I said, I was just commenting on people asking me about four months of campaign period, is it long or not? So I said of course it’s long, that’s it,” he explained.

“I don’t even touch on the transition plan, I was just responding to a question with regard to the campaign period,” he added.

Muhyiddin said he had been advised by many of his friends to be patient with the situation and not give further comments that could be misinterpreted.

Asked if he believed he could continue functioning properly in the cabinet now that some members might be upset with him, he said: “I have no problem because I delivered what I’m supposed to do. I sat together with the Prime Minister in all the cabinet meetings and other important meetings.”

Meanwhile on his qualifying to contest the Umno deputy president’s post, he thanked all the divisions that had given him their support.

“I’m very encouraged with this positive development, but of course I hope this will not stop, (I hope they) will continue just to give me the much-needed support. At the end of the day, of course I hope to win,” he added. – Bernama

Tan Lian Hoe told to apologise

LENGGONG, Oct 19 – The Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) has called on Gerakan Wanita chief Datuk Tan Lian Hoe to apologise and retract her statement which termed Malays as immigrants as it could affect racial harmony.

Its president Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said Tan, who is member of parliament for Gerik, should also clarify her statement to allay displeasure of the Malays as it involved a sensitive issue.

“It is unbecoming of her as she had contested in Gerik (in the March 8 general election) where 85% of her voters are Malays and Umno made way for her to contest the seat,” Shamsul Anuar told reporters after attending the Lenggong Umno division delegates’ meeting here today.

He said Tan should have learned a lesson from the uproar caused by former Bukit Bendera Umno division head Datuk Ahmad Ismail over an alleged racist statement.

Meanwhile, Shamsul Anuar was elected Lenggong division deputy head when he beat incumbent Datuk Ahmad Mahiyuddin Abdullah by 174 votes to 94.

Division head Datuk Ahmad Shaarani retained his post when he beat division information chief Roslan Latif. – Bernama

The heartbeat of yours is the element of my life

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 - Apart from showing Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi a quick exit, Umno ultras want early party polls to keep their grip on power in party and government while reversing possible reforms in the judiciary and investigative services.

Leading the charge is deputy presidential frontrunner Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who feels a drawn-out election campaign can sap his momentum and give an advantage to Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam in what could be a wildly unpredictable race to be the party number 2.

Mohd Ali, with three nominations like fellow contestant Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib, is seen as a more credible challenger and could qualify despite Muhyiddin's 38 nominations thus far.

"Muhyiddin is worried about Ali Rustam and his Umno network because if he qualifies, the long campaign period will work to his advantage," an Umno division leader told The Malaysian Insider.

The Malacca chief minister is said to be tapping his Malaysian Youth Council and 4B Youth network, which he once led, to garner nominations from the remaining 140-odd divisions meetings until Nov 9.

"Ali Rustam's chances are slim but he is going all out to get the nominations. Its his last chance to be in power because the new leadership will reward their people and cull the rest," a party insider said.

Abdullah himself has criticised moves to stop Mohd Ali from contesting the post. "I hear that there was an attempt by someone to ask Ali Rustam to withdraw...Why ask Ali to withdraw? What is bad about Ali?

"Let him contest and let Umno people decide whether they want Ali or otherwise," he said yesterday.

Party observers have cited Mohd Ali's lack of proficiency in English as a drawback citing the example of former deputy premier Tun Ghafar Baba's poor English skills.

"That's rich coming from Umno. After all, aren't they championing Bahasa Malaysia instead of English," a supporter of Mohd Ali told The Malaysian Insider.

Apart from party politics, several Umno politicians said the ultras, including former party president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, want to stop Abdullah from pushing reforms in the judiciary and investigative services.

Dr Mahathir, a trenchant critic of Abdullah, yesterday joined Muhyiddin in calling to bring the party polls back to December from next March

"I agree with Tan Sri Muhyiddin (Yassin), there is no need for an additional three months, what can Abdullah do in three months? I don't think he can do anything," he said.

"No need for delay, we need time to rehabilitate BN, we only have four years to do that, or else we are going to lose the next election," Dr Mahathir said.

What was left unsaid is the acerbic strongman's and other Umno politicians' opposition to proposal laws on a judicial appointments commission that is seen to loosen Malay supremacy over the judiciary.

"The Cabinet has been resisting that piece of legislation and it won't be easy for Abdullah to get it approved or even tabled. His best chance is to work with other BN component parties and Pakatan Rakyat to get it through," a government source said.

"The ultras know this so they have to make sure Abdullah is out of the picture sooner than later," he added.

The 68-year-old prime minister, who has been battling calls to quit after the March 8 polls, has promised to push through legislations to reform the judiciary, anti-corruption agency and a commission to investigate complaints against security services before he leaves office.

He will have a few weeks after the Budget debate ends on Dec 11 and possibly next March to get the laws approved before handing over to Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, his presumptous heir in a Barisan Nasional government.

The opposition Pakatan Rakyat led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have threated to unseat Abdullah's government but have yet to show the numbers to do so, with only 81 seats in the 222-seat parliament. BN has 138 seats, having lost two when the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) left the ruling coalition last month.

A relaxing day out at DAP Hari Raya bash

By Debra Chong

BANGI, Oct 18 – For a first effort, it was pretty decent. The spread was humble but substantial; the entertainment low-key but it captured the spirit of the festival; and the turnout small but muhibbah.

By all counts, the DAP's first national level Aidilfitri open house at the open-air carpark of the Kajang Municipal Council Stadium in Bandar Baru Bangi here was a success.

The members of the public who streamed in came in all shapes and shades. There were Chinese salaam-ing other Chinese, Malays, Indians and vice versa.

The mood was genial if not jolly. It helped that the weather held for the brief three hours the party lasted.

For once, it seemed, the opposition politicians were able to relax and mingle directly with the rakyat without fear of being molested or harrassed about when they were going to act on their promise to take over Putrajaya. The feel-good vibes were reflected in the easy smiles they wore on their faces.

There were representatives from the top echelon of the triparte Pakatan Rakyat at the do. Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim with his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail the president ofParti Keadilan Rakyat were there. Datuk Seri Hadi Awang, the president of PAS also attended.

The three main leaders delivered a short speech each. Mainly it focused on practising good governance and building a strong and lasting partnership among the different ethnic communities.

Much of it was spin, of course, but the core message it attempted to convey was nevertheless true, more so in light of the special reminder issued by the council of rulers last Thursday. Solidarity amid diversity.

Or as Anwar summed it: "Let us not, while building, be demolishing."

He said that it was a quote from Muhammad Natsir, an influential Indonesian politician and ulama. He explained that it was a reminder that as important as it was to build for the future, it was equally important not to break down the foundations of the society it was building on.

"The issue of morals and ethics, that is still core," Anwar said, before launching a new book about the DAP secretary-general titled "Lim Guan Eng: Dari Penjara Ke Tampuk Kuasa" (Lim Guan Eng: FromPrison to Seat of Power).

Dr M wants Umno polls back to December

By Adib Zalkapli

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — In yet another attempt to hasten Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s departure, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said the postponement of the Umno election to March next year will result in the party not having enough time to regain the people’s confidence.

“I agree with Tan Sri Muhyiddin (Yassin), there is no need for an additional three months, what can Abdullah do in three months? I don’t think he can do anything,” said Dr Mahathir.

“No need for delay, we need time to rehabilitate BN, we only have four years to do that, or else we are going to lose the next election,” he added.

On Thursday, Muhyiddin told reporters that the campaign period is too long and will drain resources.

“The campaign period is the longest in years and has never happened before. All this because we want to accommodate the so-called power transition plan,” he reportedly said.

Said Dr Mahathir today: “We need to go down and meet the people, but at the same time we are facing an economic crisis.”

On the suggestion by MCA Youth yesterday that a second deputy BN chairman be created for the party, Dr Mahathir said the idea must be studied carefully.

“BN is a multiracial coalition, if they entertain one racial group, other racial groups will be unhappy, if the Chinese support the coalition, but the Malays do not, BN will still be weak,” said Dr Mahathir.

“It must be studied carefully, whether it helps in getting the Chinese support or it will just erode the Malay support,” he added.

He said that the BN is a system that allows every group “to be represented fairly but not equally”.

“Let’s be more careful, that is why certain issues should not be discussed publicly, as it is no longer rational because people will be moved by emotion,” he added.

Similarly, he said, the idea to open up BN for direct membership should also be studied thoroughly.

Insider columnist writes book on Guan Eng

BANGI, Oct 18 – For all his newfound fame as the first DAP Chief Minister of Penang, few Malaysians know Lim Guan Eng. A new book launched today attempts to address this matter.

Titled "Lim Guan Eng: Dari Penjara Ke Tampuk Kuasa" is a slim volume in Bahasa Malaysia authored by veteran journalist Wan Hamidi Wan Hamid, a long-time friend to Lim.

It describes the DAP secretary-general's life, views and political career from his detention under the Internal Security Act in 1987 and his incarceration under the Sedition Act and the Printing Presses and Publications Act in 1998 for fighting for the rights of a young Malay girl to the present.

Hamidi who is now the editor of The Rocket, a DAP monthly publication, said he had written the book to inform the public about who Lim really is.

"You know who Lim Guan Eng is. But you think those people in the rural areas know who he is?" Hamidi said. He added that it was also why he chose to write in the national language, to cater to the majority

Malays who make up more than 60 per cent of the population.

Hamidi's book on Lim was launched by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the DAP's first national-level Aidilfitri open house in Stadium MPKJ here.

The book, priced at RM15 during the event (it normally costs RM20) was quickly snapped up by the visitors to the open house who managed to get their copies autographed by Lim who is also the Member of Parliament for Bagan.

"This is going back with me to the States," said Datuk R. Chander, the chief executive officer of the US-based Cresset Research Group. He, too, had joined the queue to get Lim's autograph.

Lawyer, Shakuntala Sharma from Penang, was equally excited to purchase a copy.

"It started with the Rahim Tamby Chik case," she said, referring to Lim's imprisonment for breaking open the scandal of former Umno Youth chief and Chief Minister of Malacca, Tan Sri Rahim Tamby Chik, who had allegedly had sex with a minor.

She beamed proudly: "He has really made it."

This brought the number of nominations she has received for the top post so far to 23.

Gerakan co-opts Chia, Asharuddin

By Shannon Teoh

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 - Gerakan has co-opted former secretary-general Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye as vice-president as well as Dr Asharuddin Ahmad as a central working committee member.

Elected committee members Teng Chang Yeow and Datuk Ng Chiang Chin were appointed secretary-general and treasurer respectively with Ng being returned to the post he held in the last term.

The Malaysian Insider understands that these decisions were reached in a CWC meeting today at the party headquarters, the first since last weekend's elections.

Chia's appointment was expected as after losing to vice-president Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan in the contest for Perak chairmanship, he decided not to run at national level.

There has also been calls, even by Huan Cheng Guan, the former Youth vice-chief who narrowly beat Asharuddin to the third and final vice-president slot, for the Kuala Selangor division secretary to be co-opted.

Chair throwing mars Kuala Selangor Wanita Umno meet

KUALA SELANGOR, Oct 18 – The Kuala Selangor Wanita Umno divisional meeting today turned ugly following a chair-throwing incident and several branch delegates walking out of the meeting.

Before the incidents, the delegates had put up a protest when Kuala Selangor Wanita Umno permanent chairman Zaini Khalid refused to give them the opportunity to propose 10 branch delegates to attend the divisional meeting tomorrow.

The media were also prevented from entering the meeting hall to observe the election process.

The division had nominated Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil to contest the post of Wanita Umno head and Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim as its vice-head in the party elections in March.

For the post of the division's Wanita Umno head, incumbent Datin Paduka Mesrah Selamat retained her post when she beat Datuk Dr Zahrah Abdul Kadir, who is the Pekan Kuala Selangor Wanita Umno branch head.

Out of the 253 votes cast, Mesrah obtained 146 votes against Zahrah's 105 while there were two spoilt votes.

The meeting was opened by Kuala Selangor Umno division head Datuk Amiruddin Setro. – Bernama

Umno youth branch meeting turns unruly

RANTAU PANJANG, Oct 17 — The Rantau Panjang Umno Youth annual meeting turned unruly today after a group of individuals claimed that several of the 461 delegates were phantom members.

Several members started shouting and voicing their dissatisfaction soon after the meeting began at 9.30 am at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Kiambang here and continued for about an hour until a light strike force of the Pasir Mas police headquarters was summoned to bring order.

The meeting later resumed after the Friday prayers.

When the meeting began, permanent chairman Nordin Ibrahim announced that 461 delegates from 144 branches were eligible to vote but delegate Suhaimi Che Hussin, head of the Taman Seri Umno Branch, said that there could be phantom members among the delegates.

He said he based his claims on the fact that there had been protests against yet-to-be concluded branch meetings such as the Tepi Sungai Branch.

Rantau Panjang Umno Youth head Affendi Yusof tried to pacify the protestors by explaining that the number of delegates had been verified by the Kelantan Umno Election and Monitoring Committee.

He said he expected the fracas as he had an inkling that certain individuals would cause trouble at the meeting.

“I had expected this, especially after four members of the Rantau Panjang Umno were suspended,” he said.

Rantau Panjang Umno division head Abdullah Mat Yasin, when approached later, said the fracas was sparked by a misunderstanding as some members had not known that their branches had changed the delegates.

“Some branches had to hold their meetings a second time under the supervision of the monitoring committee,” he told reporters.

Abdullah also said he believed that supporters of the former Rantau Panjang Umno Division head, Datuk Mohd Zain Ismail, could be unhappy with his suspension by the Umno Disciplinary Board.

Mohd Zain and three others — Ghazali Ismail, Fauzi Omar and Pauziah Che Wook (Rantau Panjang Wanita Umno head) — were among nine Umno members suspended last month. — Bernama

MCA wants equal say in BN

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 - MCA has called for a more equitable partnership in Barisan Nasional.

Secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said that while the party was committed to the coalition, "no one likes an uneven playing field."

"We cannot accept that decision made by one party must be taken as a BN decision," he explained in his opening speech at the 33rd Wanita MCA General Assembly.

Ong added that MCA did not like to hurt the feelings of others and thus, "do not like others to hurt us."

He cited Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's recent move to inform BN leaders of his handover plan to his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak before explaining it to the Umno Supreme Council as an act of placing the nation before race.

Ong also called for more BN meetings at all levels as "at the grassroots you may have leaders making sensitive remarks which affect the entire nation. Having meetings at division or state-level can diffuse the tension faster."

He also commented on the idea of BN merging into a multiracial party, stating that "whether a one-party system works or not or is genuine, is yet to be seen.

"As for now, the BN mechanism works but we need to improve it. If one day there is a need for MCA to change, the central leadership will steer the party to the right decision," the Housing and Local Government Minister said.

In his speech, he had outlined a shortcoming of a merged BN as each community would know its own problems best.

"We cannot pretend to know the intricate problems facing the Malays or Indians - better than the Malay and Indian leaders themselves."

Nonetheless, he asserted that MCA not only works "for the Chinese, but all communities in the country towards a free, democratic, just and united Malaysia.

"Actually, the special press statement is the result of deliberations by the Malay Rulers prior to their attendance at the meeting of the Conference of Rulers on Oct 16 2008," he said.

The special press statement by the Malay Rulers was regarding the special privileges, position, eminence or greatness of the Malay Rulers, Islam, Malay as the national language, the special position of the Malays, and genuine interests of the other communities in accordance with the Federal Constitution. - Bernama

Wanita MCA calls for reforms in judiciary, ACA

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — Wanita MCA wants the government to immediately implement reforms in the judiciary and the Anti-Corruption Agency and set up an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) to regain the people’s trust.

Such a move, it believes, will also reduce abuse of power in the judiciary, ACA and the police force.

This was one of nine main resolutions approved by Wanita MCA at its 33rd Annual General Assembly (AGM) held at the Putra World Trade Centre today.

Besides reforming the judiciary and the ACA, the AGM also approved resolutions on politics, the economy, party affairs, education, social and security matters and issues affecting women, family, health and the law .

The AGM also called on the government to act on the Auditor-General’s report which revealed malpractice in several government departments and urged that guilty parties be punished for abuse of power.

To ensure that national funds are utilised wisely, the AGM wants all government departments affected by the Auditor-General’s Report to be re-organised to upgrade efficiency.

Wanita MCA also urged the government to take measures to tackle global issues of food shortage by giving land and incentives to farmers, including leasing agricultural land, to help them increase production technology and output.

To reduce inflation, the Wanita MCA resolutions also urged the government to take effective steps to overcome inflation due to price hikes which includes reducing toll rates and abolishing road taxes.

The women’s wing also suggested the government advocate fair allocation of business opportunities for all races, and that assistance be given to businesses to obtain loans and incentives.

By this, it hoped to attract more foreign investors, which in turn, would create job opportunities and enhance economic development.

Realising that high-quality education is the key to the country’s economic development, the party wing pointed out that the government should consider selecting students based on meritocracy, and also open up student recruitment exercise at national universities and pre-universities to multi-ethnic students.

The movement also wanted the government to create friendlier employment conditions and environment to women, including promoting flexible working hours, increasing childcare centres and incentives for home-based childcare programmes.

It also wants all political parties to promote change using effectively researched policies to fulfill the 30 per cent representation of women at all leadership levels. — Bernama

Pas says Umno should heed Rulers' warning

By Adib Zalkapli

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 - Opposition parties Pas and PKR said today the reminder issued by the Conference of Malay Rulers yesterday is a warning to Umno not to incite racial hatred.

"I believe it was intended for the race based political parties and also media like Utusan Malaysia, which has been promoting racial hatred, through their reports and even short stories," said Pas vice president, Datuk Husam Musa.

A short story published by Utusan Malaysia last week has been criticised as incitement and a thinly-veiled attack on Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.

Husam, who is known to be a protege of Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, said that Umno should not misinterpret the Rulers' reminder and exploit it for its own political gain.

"Umno should get the message from the Rulers not to cause racial tension, and as the ruling party it is in the best position to do so," he told The Malaysian Insider.

He added the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, has agreed to defend the Federal Constitution, specifically on the Malay language and the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras.

"Pakatan Rakyat is a multi racial coalition, we always want to maintain racial harmony. There are Malay, Chinese and Indian members in DAP and in PKR," he added.

PKR information chief, Tian Chua also expressed a similar view, adding that it was a fair statement.

"It is a reminder not to politicise the issue, no political force can claim to be defending the rights of any race," said the Batu MP.

"In a way this is also a warning to Umno that this issue is none of your business. It is the Monarchy that is supposed to look after the Malay rights," said Tian.

The Conference of Malay Rulers yesterday issued a rare press statement urging everyone not to question the provisions in the Federal Constitution relating the special position of the Malays.

"It is not proper to dispute and question this Social Contract and more so to subject it to a review or change because it is the primary basis of the formation of Malaysia

"Therefore, it is appropriate for the Malay Rulers to remind that there should never be any attempt ever to test and challenge issues related to the Social Contract," said the statement.

Cabinet to discuss Anti-Corruption Bill

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 16 - Tomorrow’s meeting of the Cabinet will discuss a memorandum on the proposed Commission on the Prevention of Corruption Bill, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said today.

Upon approval by the Cabinet, the bill will be tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat at the current session, he said, adding that the second reading would take place mostly likely on Dec 11 after the conclusion of the debate on Budget 2009.

The bill is one of three which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi wants to have passed by the Dewan Rakyat before the transition of power following the Umno elections in March next year.

The others are the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill and the Special Complaints Commission Bill.

“I have asked the parliament authorities to give priority to the Commission on the Prevention of Corruption Bill and I hope we can table, debate and pass the bill at this session,” Mohamed Nazri told reporters after a Aidilfitri reception of the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), here.

Mohamed Nazri said the commission was expected to be set up early next year. He also said that the Witness Protection Bill would be tabled at the current session of the Dewan Rakyat.

Mohamed Nazri said the memorandum on the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill was being prepared and would be presented to the Cabinet, if possible, in a week or two.

“I believe we can table the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill at the current session of the Dewan Rakyat,” he said.

At the same news conference, ACA director-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan said the proposed commission would permit the recruitment of contract staff and officers experienced in specific fields.

“Right now, we are getting our officers and staff through the Public Service Commission (PSC) and whomsoever they send us, we have to take in. So, we have to train them.

“Besides, the commission will recruit suitable officers on contract or attachment to assist us, to improve our service,” he said.

On allegations of irregularity in the government’s purchase of helicopters from Eurocopter to replace the Nuri aircraft now used by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), he said: “We will look into it.”

“If there is irregularity in any case at all, we will investigate,” he said.

On allegations of irregularity in the staging of the Monsoon Cup sailing competition in Terengganu, Ahmad Said said the ACA conducted several checks and found no such thing.

“There was no corruption. We should clear this thing up. Otherwise, it will give a bad image not only to Terengganu but Malaysia as a whole as the world event organiser, he said. - Bernama

Dr M refutes de facto PM claims

TRONOH, Oct 16 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today brushed off talk that he will be the de facto prime minister, standing behind Datuk Seri Najib Razak as alleged by former de facto law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

Zaid had also suggested that the fall of Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi was the result of Dr Mahathir prevailing.

Describing the talk as “a lot of nonsense”, Dr Mahathir said Najib was his own man and there was no assurance that the deputy prime minister would listen to whatever the former prime minister said.

“I also thought that when Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was appointed (prime minister), he would perhaps consult me on some issues, but as you see he never asked me anything. In fact, he reversed all that I did,” he told reporters after delivering a public lecture at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, here today.

International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had also denied that Dr Mahathir orchestrated the increasing popularity of him and Najib so that they could be the future leaders of the country.

“I don’t think you should be in any way confused because you see us together (with Mahathir). The fact that we meet at certain functions doesn’t mean that there are major developments happening,” Muhyiddin had told reporters after co-chairing the first Malaysia-Indonesia Joint Trade and Investment Committee Meeting yesterday.

Dr Mahathir, meanwhile, said it was up to the Gerakan leaders to choose whether to remain in Barisan Nasional or not.

He said Gerakan had two options of joining the opposition or becoming an independent party if it decided to leave BN.

“With the opposition, it (Gerakan) will be a very junior partner as it is mainly concentrated in Penang. If it becomes an independent party, never mind... an independent party has never been able to form a government,” he said in reference to Gerakan’s oft-repeated threat to quit the ruling coalition.

“It’s up to the Gerakan leaders to choose. If they stay in BN, they have the chance of remaining in government, or become an independent party, or put themselves under (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim (PKR advisor) and they have to follow him. It’s their choice,” he said. — Bernama

Kit Siang to Najib: Answer allegations please

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 - Veteran opposition lawmaker Lim Kit Siang urged Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to attend the ongoing Dewan Rakyat sitting and clarify to all MPs, and not just a selected few, the truth surrounding the allegations against him.

Lim told reporters in the Parliament lobby this afternoon that Najib was behaving like a “fugitive on the run” by staying away from parliamentary sessions and refusing to answer queries from the Opposition.

The DPM has been faced with mounting pressure over swirling allegations ranging from his involvement in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder investigation to defence commissions for the Scorpene submarines, Sukhoi jetfighters and Eurocopter helicopters.

Lim said that several Barisan Nasional (BN) backbenchers had apparently received an explanation from Najib this morning on the allegations against him.

He noted also that Najib had not denied the SMS exchanges with Datuk Shafee Abdullah who was the defence lawyer for Abdul Razak Baginda, an aide of Najib who is undergoing trial in the Altantuya murder.

“For Najib to satisfy BN MPs requires no effort,” the MP for Ipoh Timur quipped. He emphasised that Najib must meet all MPs, not only BN MPs.

“We'll never be able to get the confidence of Malaysians and the rest of the world,” he said.

Bandar Kuching MP, Chong Chieng Jen who was present at the press conference echoed Lim's call. He related that in a similar case in Sarawak, the chief minister Taib Mahmud who was also surrounded by scandal had made his stand clear in the state legislative assembly.

“It is only proper for Najib to make a ministerial statement in Parliament,” said Chong. “That is the least he can do.”

Meanwhile, Gombak MP Azmin Ali reiterated Lim's repeated calls for Najib to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry to clear his name from the scandals.

“We are not making arbitrary allegations. We are not accusing him of being involved in those scandals,” said the Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president.

Ex-Umno lawyer is new CJ

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 – Tan Sri Zaki Azmi will be elevated to the post of Chief Justice of the Federal Court in what will certainly be a controversial appointment because of his former ties with Umno.

Zaki was for many years the legal counsel for Umno and had also served on the party's Disciplinary Committee.

The Malaysian Insider understands that the Rulers Conference meeting in Kuala Terengganu has consented to the appointment.

Zaki replaces Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamed who retires tomorrow. His elevation comes just one year after his controversial appointment as a Federal Court judge.

He has the distinction of being the first ever person elevated directly from the Bar to the Federal Court. Soon after his appointment to the Federal Court, he was made President of the Court of Appeal.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang was among those who urged the government against considering Zaki for the Chief Justice position, pointing out that it would herald another judicial crisis because of his close association with Umno.

The appointment of the Chief Justice is made through the recommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice to the Prime Minister. The PM in turn advises the Conference of Rulers on the appointment.

Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Alauddin Mohd Sheriff and Federal Court judge Datuk Ariffin Zakaria were reportedly among those being considered for the job.

Malaysia asked to play role in Thai- Cambodia row

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 - Malaysia has been asked to play a role to help resolve the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia which is seen to be getting worse.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said ASEAN secretary-general Dr Surin Pitsuwan contacted him late yesterday evening asking for Malaysia's help to resolve the conflict between the two countries.

"We will study the situation closely especially the dispute over the Preah Vihear temple at their common border and if the Cabinet gives the green light, I will make a trip to Cambodia. As a friendly neighbour to both countries, we must do all we can to prevent the situation from getting out of hand," he told a press conference at Parliament's lobby here today.

Rais said Surin's call to ASEAN countries to step in and help resolve the conflict through diplomatic channels was timely.

"This is because he is entrusted with the task of preserving harmony in ASEAN. And it is not only Malaysia that has been asked to help but one or two other countries as well," he said.

Rais said since Thailand and Cambodia are members of ASEAN, it was pertinent on the part of other states in ASEAN to play a positive role in the conflict.

"I should also be going to Thailand although in Thailand the position is not as congenial as we may expect for the moment due to the fact that the government is preoccupied with a certain domestic situation.

"Therefore with that request from the secretary-general, Malaysia will try to play a small role, if I may put it that way so that the two parties would come to the conference table more instead of using the physical confrontational approach that have been reported by the media," he said.

Thailand and Cambodia are reported to be on the brink of war because of the dispute. Two Cambodian soldiers died while seven Thai soldiers were injured when skirmishes broke out yesterday between the troops station there.

In another development, Rais said that Malaysia was also requested by United Nations (UN) secretary-general Ban Ki Moon to play a positive role in
determining the situation and the atmosphere in Myanmar through the UN office in
the next few weeks.

"I am considering a few options in determining what is the best way to approach our friends in Myanmar towards the situation there specifically in respect of the human rights and problems that are being faced by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for the moment," he said. - Bernama

Muhyiddin moves to finish off PM

COMMENTARY

OCT 16 — Buoyed by the overwhelming lead he has secured for the deputy presidency after the first week of nominations from Umno divisions, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has moved to land a fatal blow on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Under the latest, and what many thought was the final version of the transition plan, Abdullah announced that he would not stand for re-election in Umno and hand over power when the party’s annual congress officially elects its new leader in March.

Following Abdullah’s announcement, as planned, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, is cruising towards an uncontested win with no one else managing to secure a nomination for the top post thus far. For many in Umno, it is already a foregone conclusion that Najib and Muhyiddin will be the next leadership pair of the party and government.

But until now, there was also widespread acceptance for the postponement of the party congress from December to March in order to give Abdullah some time to finish his promised reforms. It seems that even that is now under question.

When met by reporters today, Muhyiddin said that the campaign period was too long and that this would affect the official work of ministers and deputy ministers aspiring for posts in the party.

Reading between the lines of Muhyiddin’s statement is a clear move to oust Abdullah earlier.

Muhyiddin has been at the forefront of the campaign to get Abdullah to resign after the March general election which initially resulted in the 2010 formula, and then when Muhyiddin felt that he could push it further, he succeeded in orchestrating calls for an earlier handover which finally led to the March 2009 agreement where Abdullah would step down as Prime Minister after the party congress.

Now, Muhyiddin is at it again. Perhaps confident that he has no real challenger for the deputy presidency considering his nearest rival, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Ali Rustam, is trailing far behind in nomination numbers, Muhyiddin is now going for the kill by appealing to Umno members to exert pressure once again on the leadership to bring the date of the congress forward and hence get Abdullah out quicker.

The move is calculated to give an advantage to the current frontrunners who are all perceived to be aligned to the Najib-Muhyiddin ticket — vice-president aspirants Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, and Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir who is leading the race for the Youth leadership.

The quicker the congress, where delegates will elect those who make it past the nomination stage, the better the chances are for these frontrunners. If the congress takes place in March 2009 as scheduled, sentiment can turn against those who have taken an early lead.

However, the main point behind Muhyiddin's latest move is that it is designed to cut short Abdullah's extra time in office. It is possible that the latest round of political attacks on Najib has created a sense that the transition must happen quicker before any more damage is done to the incoming premier.

Many Najib supporters feel that he will be better able to handle the accusations if he is already the Prime Minister and that March may be too far away. For Muhyiddin, an earlier Abdullah exit will also see him appointed as Deputy Prime Minister quicker.

Muhyiddin's latest statement comes a few days after a telling photograph was published in a leading Malay-language daily of him, Najib and former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad sitting together at a Hari Raya open house.

For political observers, the photograph spoke not just a thousand, but a million words. Dr Mahathir wants nothing more than Abdullah being booted out of office sooner than later.

It seems Muhyiddin is about to deliver that for the man who has come out in vocal support for him as Najib's deputy.

Public Accounts Committee to look into Eurocopter, Maybank, TM deals

By Debra Chong

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will be conducting inquiries into a number of recent controversial deals involving both the public and private sector, including the acquisition of Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII) by Maybank, the Eurocopter deal and the broadband project awarded to Telekom Malaysia.

Its chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid told reporters today that the committee will soon be calling in the relevant parties to understand their rationale behind the decisions.

He said that the committee had yet to fix a specific date to begin their inquiries.

Asked if the committee would call in the Deputy Prime Minister to assist in their inquiries, Azmi smiled and said: “We will see first. We don’t want to jump the gun.”

Petaling Jaya Utara parliamentarian Tony Pua, who is also a member of the PAC, later explained that the inquiries would take some time.

But he was optimistic that the matters would be dealt with by next month or “definitely by year end”.

“There are too many issues to discuss. The presentation for Maybank itself will take up to one hour. then the panel will want to ask questions.

“Each could easily take up half a day and that doesn’t take into account the issues that have already been planned ahead,” he elaborated.

However, he said the chairman was working hard to arrange for follow-up meetings on a weekly basis.

Today’s PAC meeting which lasted three hours also discussed other matters of national security.

Mostly, it focused on immigration issues, specifically on measures to control the influx of illegal immigrants and the approval of visas-on-arrival.

Pua noted that since the government has tightened the approval for visas-on-arrival, there has been a significant drop in the number of foreigners abusing the method to enter Malaysia.

However, he added, the committee has yet to completely resolve the issue of illegal immigrants.

The committee urged the immigration department to implement the biometrics system at all entry points into the country. Azmi said the fingerprint scanning system would been an effective and immediate method to reduce the influx of the illegals.

“Even though the cost is high, the social cost would be greatly reduced,” Azmi said.

Traders have social obligation to cut price, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 - Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today that the traders should voluntarily lower the prices of goods in line with the drop in the fuel retail prices without waiting for the government to act.

"It is their social obligation," the prime minister told reporters after attending the closing of the Merdeka Spirit Programme 2008 and the opening of Akademi Kenegaraan at the National Civics Bureau in Jalan Bellamy here.

Yesterday Abdullah announced a reduction of 15 sen in the price of petrol to RM2.30 a litre and 20 sen to RM2.20 for a litre of diesel, effective today.

Abdullah also took a swipe at some consumer associations for leaving it to the government to monitor and overcome the problem of high prices of goods without lifting a finger to help.

"They don't do anything and this is something that should not have happened. If these consumer associations want the government to supervise the prices of essential goods, they should cooperate with the government," he said.

He said the consumers associations were very powerful and they should use that power to teach their members how to handle traders who sell goods at high or unreasonable prices.

Asked whether he was advocating that consumers boycott traders who charge exorbitant prices for essential goods, he said it was up to the consumers because "we cannot teach them what to do."

He gave an assurance that the government would take action against traders who quoted excessively high or unreasonable prices for their goods but said that it needed the cooperation of consumers.

The prime minsiter also said that he had instructed the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad to meet the representatives of consumer associations to discuss the matter.

Asked whether reducing the fuel prices in stages or a little at a time had made it difficult for traders to make adjustments to the prices of essential goods, he said the government had decided to lower the fuel prices according to what was happening in the international market.

"I hope that the people will understand and work with the government in this matter," he said.

He also advised them to grow their own food like vegetables in efforts to overcome the increase in the prices of goods. – Bernama

Hindraf outlawed

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 – The Hindu Rights Actions Force (Hindraf) has been declared an illegal organisation from today.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said the decision to outlaw Hindraf was made after the ministry being satisfied with facts and evidence that showed Hindraf had and was being used for unlawful purposes and posed a threat to public order and morality.

“Based on powers vested under Section 5(1) of the Societies Act, Hindraf from today is declared an illegal organisation,” he said in a statement issued here.

He said the order was being made as a result of monitoring and investigation on the organisation's activities by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and Home Ministry, since Hindraf's inception.

If left unchecked, Syed Hamid said, Hindraf would continue to pose a threat to public order, the security and sovereignty of the country as well as the prevailing racial harmony.

“The decision to declare Hindraf an illegal organisation is not based on one or two of its activities that are in contravention of the law but covers all the actions it has taken since being formed,” he said.

Hindraf had all the criteria of an organised movement, Syed Hamid said, because it had filed for registration with the ROS on Oct 16 last year.

The application had yet to be approved but Hindraf had actively exploited the Indian community to organise illegal assemblies and street demonstrations without permits to the point of causing a segment of the community to rise up against the government and also hatred among the Malays and Indians in the country, he said.

“Hindraf has also tried to secure support from foreign countries for the purpose of pressuring the government to bow to its demands,” he added.

Syed Hamid advised the public to distance themselves from Hindraf and not participate in any way in any of its activities. – Bernama

Jui Meng accuses The Star of bias

By Debra Chong

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 – The Group Editor-in-chief of The Star says he is puzzled by the accusations of bias levelled at the newspaper by MCA presidential candidate Datuk Chua Jui Meng.

“I do not know what he means,” Datuk Wong Chun Wai told The Malaysian Insider in a phone interview this evening.

In an open letter addressed to the editor-in-chief of the local English daily yesterday, Datuk Chua Jui Meng accused a reporter and the editorial team of going all out to “put words in my mouth andpaint me as a power-hungry man” in an article published on October 11.

Chua, in his letter, wrote that the paper had tried to disparage his reputation when it reported him as saying he would “sacrifice” his party peers “so that I can be appointed to the Cabinet if I am elected President”.

In the same letter, he stated that he had asked for a “correction” from Wong, which the latter had agreed to do the next day.

“However, to my disappointment, on October 12th you published an article saying that I claimed that my statement was 'taken out of context',” he continued in the following paragraph.

Wong responded that he had made the amendment as requested.

“We carried a clarification the next day and we have continued to provide space for him in coverage, you see. We provided a Page 1 picture of him yesterday with Ong Tee Keat under the heading 'Full House' and the day before that, with Chan Kong Choy,” he said.

He added: “If he feels he needs to make further clarification, we will definitely run his clarification. It's no problem at all, you see. We will continue to be fair in his coverage.”

Asked if he had seen the video clip of the interview, which Chua said he had put on video–sharing website YouTube titled “Keeping the Star newspaper honest”, Wong replied he had not.

Still no show for MCA debate, Soi Lek suspects black hand

By Shannon Teoh

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 - The National Film Development Corporation (Finas) has rejected the first recorded cut of last night's MCA deputy presidential debate.

The Malaysian Insider understands that broadcaster ntv7 has been asked to reedit the recording and appeal the decision tomorrow.

It is understood that Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai's mention of the late former Port Klang assemblyman Datuk Zakaria Md Deros was considered sensitive and could stir up emotions.

Lim had mentioned Zakaria, who gained infamy for not submitting building plans for his multi-million ringgit home dubbed Istana Zakaria, as an example of abuse of power during the debate.

Set to be televised live over ntv7 at 8.30pm last night, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had “advised” the broadcaster to submit the recording of the debate for censorship approval before screening it.

When contacted, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek (photo) defended his opponent's use of Zakaria as an example.

“What is so sensitive? Everyone is aware of this case. In a debate, people will cite examples and so Lim mentioned it as an example of abuse of power and display of wealth,” said the former health minister.

“I still think there is a black hand behind the cancellation of the live telecast.

“It doesn't look good when a a minister does not want to turn up for a debate. So maybe there is a black hand involved to reduce the negative impact for candidates who did not turn up for the debate,” he explained with an apparent reference to Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan.

Lim declined to comment at length, preferring to wait until an official reason was given.

However, he mentioned that the Zakaria scandal was something that had happened and was openly talked about.

The MCA vice-president instead said that the debate should have been televised live anyway, as “Malaysian society wants to know more about how the country is run” and the government should be more transparent.

“We need to relook at the whole way we approach this,” he added.

An executive editor at ntv7, Adriana Aris, said that the station had yet to get an official response from the authorities.

“We have sent it to the censorship board but we will only be informed of its decision tomorrow,” she said.

She added that the reason given by MCMC not to broadcast the debate live was valid as the station did not submit an application two weeks in advance.
