KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 - Former Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo qualified to contest the Umno Youth top post when he received his 39th nomination from Balik Pulau Umno Youth today.
There are 191 divisions in the movement and, according to the party’s constitution, aspirants must be nominated by at least 39 divisions in order to be eligible to contest the post. The Umno polls are scheduled to be held in March next year.
The divisions that had earlier nominated Dr Mohd Khir are Kapar, Tumpat, Cheras, Taiping, Mersing, Masjid Tanah, Shah Alam, Sungai Siput, Nibong Tebal, Kinabatangan, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat, Kemaman, Selayang, Petaling Jaya Selatan, Wangsa Maju, Segambut, Kuala Krau, Tapah, Grik, Bukit Gantang, Labis and Dungun.
The others are Kelana Jaya, Batu, Gopeng, Beluran, Hulu Selangor, Serdang, Marang, Seputeh, Maran, Lumut, Parit, Kluang, Sipitang, Sandakan and Petaling Jaya Utara.
The contest for the post is now a three-horse race. Jerlun MP Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir is in the lead with 66 nominations so far while Umno Youth deputy chief and Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin has obtained 44 nominations.
A total of 147 divisions have held their meetings so far, the rest must do so by Nov 9.
As for the contest for the Youth Number Two post, the frontrunners are Muar MP Razali Ibrahim who has obtained 78 nominations while Umno Youth executive member Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican has received 65. The cut is 20 nominations. - Bernama
