TAMPIN, Feb 7 — The Energy, Water and Communications Ministry will announced the new electricity tariff before March 1, Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said today.
He said as it would involve reductions of between seven and 10 per cent for several industries besides residential units.
"We have discussed it with the Economic Planning Unit and it will be discussed by the Cabinet on Wednesday but I cannot disclose the amount," he told reporters.
He said the ministry would also give rebates to industries using big amounts of electricity such iron manufacturing and water.
For this purpose, he said, the ministry would cooperate with the International Trade and Industry Ministry to identify several strategic industries.
Priority would also be given to several critical industries including food which were labour intensive besides those using industrial equipment, he said.
"We have asked Petronas to cut gas prices to help reduce the cost of electricity, and the Cabinet also asked the ministry to look into this matter two weeks ago," he said. — Bernama
