Acid attack on Umno branch leader

KOTA BARU, Sept 3 — An Umno branch leader here was seriously injured on the face when splashed with acid by an unknown man in the compound of his house at Kampung Chekok, Panji, near here, early today.

Deputy Kelantan police chief SAC II Amir Hamzah Ibrahim said the incident happened about 2.30am when Datuk Azaha Abdul Rani arrived home after chairing the Limau Manis Umno branch meeting.

"He was closing the house gate when a man appeared and splashed acid at him," Amir said.

Azha's wife, Datin Marina Najib, who had just entered the house, was alerted by his screams. She then called the police.

Azha, 48, who is also the Kelantan People's Action Council (MTRK) vice-president, was sent to the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM), Kubang Kerian, for treatment.

Amir said Azha, who was scalded on the face and parts of his body, was reported in stable condition.

He said police were investigating the motive for the attack. — Bernama
